Be true to yourself…

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Sometimes you have to do things simply to be true to yourself. No big thing but fundamental. Or with Kierkegard: To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily… to not dare, is to lose oneself. We all can Horst.

Horst… who?

Now it is official. Mr. Wulff is supposed to become the next president of the Federal Republic of Germany. At the end a surprise - after the discussions of Mrs. von der Leyen - but yet no rum start. There were only few candidates really on the short list while Mr. Schäuble or Lammert I did not see there. Yet the only thing counting is a fast end of any selection process that would have weakened the government for a too long period. There are by all means more important issues to handle with. The crisis not only the financial one but also the crisis resulting from Israel’s attack on a ship carrying humanitarian supplies with all political consequences will absorb the governments energy in the next future. Against that background the new election of a new president seems to be a tiny problem. So don’t waste any time. At the end: much ado about nothing. Instead of Mr. Köhler we will have Mr. Wulff on the top of the state only struggling predominantly the embassies around the world that have to change their pictures on the walls. Employees in Bellevue have to learn a new name, some walls will be newly painted according to the style of Mrs. Wulff and we will learn to get adapted to a new dialect listening to his speeches if one likes to listen to a president’s speeches anyway. But I am also glad to learn that even on that holy level one rule never changes: everybody is replaceable even if you don’t believe this for yourself. Another rule applies for how fast a farewell from a position will be forgotten. On normal levels we are talking at least about three days;for presidents this seems to be only a couple of hours that is yet impressive. From next week on nobody will talk about the former president any more and it will end how it started. Horst… who?
